Transitional Southlake Kitchen Remodel

_DSC9285

It is always such a wonderful feeling to complete a remodel.  I always feels so bad for the clients that have to live in the space while the chaos is going on.

This kitchen got a total transformation. Originally it had 2 islands which really was not very functional.  The cabinets were too busy and they needed a lift with a fresh color.  The pickled "pink wood" is no longer in as we all know.

before and after

As you can see, we left all the appliances.  We made one large island,  extended the cabinets to the ceiling and added glass cabinets with lighting.  We refaced the cabinet doors so they weren't so fussy, added undercounter lighting, took out the desk area and made it into a mini bar with a wine refrigerator.

New backsplash, granite and hardware.  The lighting in the shelving really makes the accessories look beautiful.  I really love the rain glass for cabinets.  Allows you to see the items but hides the dust.

Don't you just love the tile wall behind the shelves?  The hardware on the cabinets is fab too.

Ruthie Tip:  If you want to do a quick update to your kitchen, hardware is a great way to revamp it instantly.

New recessed lighting.  We also moved all the plugs down so that they aren't in the middle of our beautiful backsplash!

The island is the star in this kitchen.  The pendant light is from "Restoration Hardware."  I LOVE IT!

We added a pull out garbage drawer and some extra storage.  We painted the island a different color than the cabinets, it really makes it feel rich.

Gorgeous granite!

We made the pantry door taller to match the other doorways in the home.  Amazing the difference that made!

Added accessories and it was a wrap!

Don't you just love the glass backsplash all the way around the windows?

New hardwood floors throughout the entire downstairs really makes this kitchen so warm!

Now it's the perfect kitchen for entertaining!

Thanks to Debbie for allowing me to make her home beautiful and to T. Lamar Photography for doing such a great job with the photo shoot!

"Rocky" Inspired Kitchen Remodel

There has been lots of labor going on with DecRenew Interiors the past few months!

I've been working with these clients on several projects over the years in their home.  The kitchen was Phase II of the projects we have done so far.  Next week we start on all their bathrooms!

They have a wonderful home in a very wooded area.  They purchased the home because of the amazing backyard and the rustic, casual feel of the home.  They love all the wood that is in the interior but felt that the kitchen was too dark. I totally agreed.

So we lightened it up!  They were really hesitant about changing the kitchen because they didn't want it to feel out of place with the rest of their home.  They were nervous that it would look updated and everything else would look out of date.  I assured them that we could update the kitchen and make it look fantastic with the rest of the rooms that flow from the kitchen.

We got to work and selected cabinet color, granite, venta hood, faucet, sink, hardware, stone work for bar, gas stove, double oven, refrigerator and lighting.

We adjusted the cabinets above the bread box for a bigger microwave.  The island also got a makeover with new legs and a new stylish color.

We worked with the paneling in the other rooms and made sure that we kept some consistency in the kitchen with what is going on everywhere else.  We left the crown molding wood so it ties in with the adjacent dining room.

We added new lighting to the cove in the dining room and that really made it look fabulously updated.

Love these mercury glass pendants that we placed over their curved bar area.  The client wanted to keep her existing island lighting since they had just replaced it a year ago.

The granite we selected was the one thing that my client was terrified of.  She felt like it would make the kitchen darker.  I assured her that it would be the focal point in the kitchen and would be beautiful with the woodwork in the home.

So bright and still looks very warm!

The stone work on the bar is my favorite, it really makes the kitchen fresh and it adds a masculine feel to the space.

Rocky the dog is happy because his coloring matches the kitchen beautifully!

I'm now taking the long weekend off to hang with my family! Hope you take time to enjoy Labor Day too!

Decorator & Client Relationship

I promised I would post before and after photos of the house I recently finished.  Their entire home was remodeled and updated.  Anytime you are doing a remodel it is a huge interruption to every day life for the client.  These clients truly got to experience organized chaos as we invaded their home!  The great thing about it was that we completed the entire project in 8 weeks which I thought was amazing for all that we accomplished.

Fortunately, I have an amazing crew that always comes through for me.  Everything from the floors to the painting to the granite, turned out beautifully.  There are always bumps in the road when you are doing a remodel but what I appreciate with my team is that we work together so well and we are all committed to making the client happy.  They very rarely say "no that can't be done" and are always willing to find a solution to problems that we encounter along the way.

Entire home remodels are incredibly stressful and it's a long process.  The client and I see each other almost daily and it's crucial to me that we build a strong relationship during that time period.  It is so important that the client and decorator have a great relationship. I take my job seriously when it comes to this relationship so there is honesty, compassion, reliability, trust, encouragement and most of all fun in the midst of complete demolition at times.  I find it an incredible honor when they say
 "I trust you"

I'm  blessed to develop these kind of relationships with all my clients.
They were incredibly generous and wrote a beautiful review on Houzz.com

"Ruthie Staalsen made my dreams come true. I can easily give her my highest recommendation. She took our outdated home and made it pop! It is now stunning, classy and elegant. We couldn't be happier. We did a complete home remodel, update and renew. It seemed like an overwhelming task for me to tackle on my own, so I hired Ruthie. She had remodeled my friends home, which I loved, so I had complete confidence in her abilities and taste.
From my first meeting with Ruthie, I knew this was going to be fun and exciting. The minute she walked in my house she started sharing her wonderful ideas and tips to make my house more current. She is extremely confident in her choices which made me feel confident. I knew I had found a treasure! She is professional, experienced and respectful to all. She kept the project on schedule and solved all problems with a positive attitude.
The most fun was the install day when Ruthie really works her magic! We came home to color and beauty. Lots of new items to enjoy and old items in new places. So fresh and inviting. Thank you Ruthie! You truly are the best!"

Thank you Mark and Linda for allowing us to invade your home so we could transform it!

Who wouldn't sleep tight in this master bed?  I created this headboard because I wanted it to be higher than usual.  Many times I see headboards hung too low.  By the time you get the euro shams on the bed with a few pillows, the beautiful headboard is covered up.  We hung this one on the wall so it has a grander appearance!  Perfect for sitting in bed to lean against while you read or drink your morning coffee.

Newly painted beams and hardwood floors makes this room incredible now.

New black leathered counter tops were added to their bar area.  The leathered granite is honed down so it's not shiny and has a wavy feel to it.  I really LOVE it!

Looks beautiful doesn't it?  It is now a conversational piece in the room.

I never skimp on lighting!  It is the jewelry in every kitchen.  We always include dimmers so the light can be adjusted as needed.  I love being able to adjust the light to the mood I feel, especially when entertaining.

We gave the bar area a little more curve and that really made the space look fantastic.

I don't have before pictures of the dining room :( so you will have to just see the after :(!

We added new drapes, rug, parson chairs and put new hardware on the china cabinet.

Of course the new accessories make this room sparkle.

Hope you enjoyed the tour.  Thanks to Marquette Bellinghausen with Simple Treasures Photography my incredibly talented friend, that always come through for me with her gorgeous photography.  You rock girlfriend and thanks for photographing my little topiary trees as they were (even though it bugged you that they weren't both upright).  I love the artistic twist this image has.

Today is an exciting day because I pick up my youngest daughter from the airport after being gone for 10.  She was on a missions trip to Czech Republic.  While she was there she became ill and had to be hospitalized.  I'm incredibly grateful to all those that cared for her and can't wait to hug all their necks at the airport today.

You can see a quick video of their trip here created by one of the students that went on the trip!

Traditional Home Magazine & Great Kitchen's Digital Edition!

Sneek Peek

Several months ago I received information about a Traditional Home contest and immediately felt it would be something I should enter. (see above).

They gave us an option to choose from 5 categories.

1.  The Ultimate Kitchen
2. Entertaining Secrets
3. Favorite Kitchen Designer
4. At Home Event Theme & Menu
5. Best Dressed Table

I couldn't decide whether I wanted to enter for the "Best Dressed Table" or enter one of my Kitchens in the "Ultimate Kitchen" category.

As you know if you follow my blog, I'm not only crazy about decorating and design, I'm passionate about entertaining, food, parties, gathering friends and families together and all things beautiful!

I wrote a post last year about one of the Gourmet Dinner club parties that my husband and I hosted.  See the Tablescape, Food & Menu that I thought would have been great for the "Best Dressed Table" or "At Home Event Theme and Menu" submission.

In the end I decided to enter one of my kitchen remodels that I am so passionate about.  One of the main reasons is that it has a fabulous family story that I knew many would LOVE and enjoy if I shared it!  The kitchen is absolutely gorgeous too because my client has great taste!  I checked with her to make sure it would be okay to submit the entry and she was elated.  My client and I shared fun & happy moments and as I worked on this kitchen with my contracting crew.  My team grew to love their family and were sad when the job was over.  She even made all the guys her famous "iced"  brownies when the job was done and they devoured the entire pan.  They said they were "off the chain", An expression that I had never heard!!

I collected my thoughts, pictures, etc. and submitted my kitchen with crossed fingers and held my breath, hoping that I would win......

Well, the other day I was notified by Traditional Home Magazine that my kitchen (my client's kitchen to be correct) did win in this contest!!!

I am beside excited and so is my client!  Thank you Traditional Home for this honor of being chosen.

My kitchen remodel will be a part of the Great Kitchens Digital Edition, full of fresh inspiration—from design tricks and cooking tips to entertaining must-haves that will be live May 24th so keep a watch out for it!
