Exterior House Painting

So glad to have my house painted.
There is something great  about getting to pick the color you want for your home.  The color we had when we bought our house 4 years ago was fine but it was a bit too "pinky" for me.  I lived with it because it had just been painted.  I did get to pick a new roof so I chose a dark slate because I knew I had plans for repainting later on.
(This is NOT my house)
Now that it's time to repaint due to peeling paint :) I was excited to be able to pick the colors I wanted.
(Sherwin Williams Colors)
Color on the left was for all the trim, gutters and siding.  The one on the right was for all the exterior doors.
Picking the right color for your exterior is so important. It can really smarten up your curb appeal.  I drive by homes so often when it is getting painted and just squirm in my seat thinking that they are repainting their house and have chosen awful colors that don't even go with their brick.  One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is not HIRING A PROFESSIONAL to help them if they aren't good at choosing color.   We don't just choose colors because we love them or because they are on the sale rack.  (Nothing wrong with a sale but make sure it's the right color for your home).
I had several people ask me what colors I used because they wanted to use them for their home.  It doesn't work like that!  Each home is different and as a professional, we choose colors based on so many variables.  It's not just paint, it creates personality and adds value and character to your home.
BEFORE
See the "pinky" hue?
Like I said, the color was safe and matched the brick.  It just didn't have that real "classy" feel that I wanted.  I chose a color that I though would make the roof blend in a little better and make the home look rich.  I pulled the gray colors from the brick for the siding and then chose a darker color for the exterior doors.
AFTER
I LOVE the sophisticated feel it has now.  The chimney looks great now too! It feels like mine now and there is no more PINK.  There is something great about making a place feel like YOURS.
AFTER
My husband loves it too!
SCORE, especially since he was unsure and I said "trust me honey" and he said "I do"
Now I just need to stain my front door and we are good to go for another 5+ years.
Thank you Sherwin Williams, you have pleased me once again!

Important things in life

My neighbor sent me this today via e-mail and it touched me.  I just had to pass it on.  It's worth the read I promise!
A young man learns what's most important in life from the guy next door.
Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
"Jack, did you hear me?" "Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack said.. "Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent over 'his side of the fence' as he put it," Mom told him.
"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said. "You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life," she said "He's the one who taught me carpentry," he said. "I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me  things he thought were important...Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said. As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time. Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture....Jack stopped suddenly...
"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked. "The box is gone," he said "What box?" Mom asked. "There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most,'" Jack said. It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it. "Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said. "I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom."
It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died Returning home from work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. "Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days," the note read.
Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The small box was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention. "Mr. Harold Belser" it read. Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside. "Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life." A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, as tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your time! -Harold Belser."
"The thing he valued most was...my time" Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days. "Why?" Janet, his assistant asked. "I need some time to spend with my son," he said. "Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!" "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away," Think about this. You may not realize it, but it's 100% true.
1. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way..
2. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.
3. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.
4.. You mean the world to someone.
5. If not for you, someone may not be living.
6. You are special and unique.
7. When you think you have no chance of getting what you want, you probably won't get it, but if you trust God to do what's best, and wait on His time, sooner or later, you will get it or something better.
8. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good can still come from it.
9. When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a look: you most likely turned your back on the world.
10. Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.
11.. Always remember the compliments you received.. Forget about the rude remarks.
12 . Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when they know and you'll both be happy.
13. If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know that they are great.
Blessings on your day today and thank you for the time you spend reading my blog!

Tablescapes and Dinner

My husband and I belong to a Gourmet Dinner Club and it's such fun to rotate to different homes each month.  Last night it was our turn to host!
Hosting together was a blast!  He loves to plan and so do I.  I love to make things beautiful and he loves to make things taste incredible.  We make a good team and it's always fun to find things to do together that we enjoy!

It was a blast preparing the table scape as well as the menu.

I created this menu on Microsoft Publisher and printed them on card stock.  The turquoise print matched one of the leaves on the tablecloth.  The menu was a bit of fun added to the table and made for great conversation as the guests were seated.

Casa Roca is our house name.

Fresh flowers always make a nice statement on a table.  I bought the small vases about a year ago and hadn't used them yet so it was great to pull those out.

I made the napkin rings out of ribbon and they added a pop of color and interest to the table!

I had this beautiful round tray and it happened to coordinate with the tablecloth so it was in the center of the table.  I placed all the flowers on the tray and I think it really made a nice centerpiece and smelled divine.
My girls enjoyed helping me set up so it became a family affair.  Of course they didn't want to have anything to do with the thousands of dishes that were in sink after the party :(
We had Bruschetta for the Starters as well as hot crab dip.  We tried to prepare as much as possible ahead of time so we weren't too frantic when our guests arrived.
Everyone was served champagne as they arrived with a raspberry floating on top :)
We served a wedge salad with blue cheese or ranch dressing as our starter.

The main entree was roasted carrots with shallots and thyme.

English roasted potatoes.  These are my absolute favorite and growing up I was the one who had to make them each Sunday after church.

Rib Eye Steak with Devil's Sauce cooked to perfection.

The sweet raspberry jam in the sauce made it divine.
We then had this chocolate delight for our dessert.  I made them in individual glasses so it was easy to serve out on the patio with coffee.

Ruthie's Party Tip:  Plan as much as you can in advance.  You want things to be fresh but things you can do ahead of time make it less stressful for you.  You want to be a good host or hostess and not be frazzled to the max when you guests arrive.  We always allow for about 20 minutes before the party to sit and just relax before everyone shows up.  We put it on our "to do" list for the party day.  I even have the coffee ready to brew so I don't have to think about that later either.
The best part of the whole evening was the conversation, laughter and time shared together!
Hope your week is filled with beauty!  Remember I can help you with your next party.  I offer a party consultation that helps you walk through all the details of planning a party and how to "use what you have" for the setup.  It's money well spent and lots of stress relieved on your part.
I get to enjoy these flowers all week now so that's amazing!

Before & After Banquette

(Pinterest.com)
I'm preparing a design plan right now for a client that wants a banquette in her kitchen.
(Pinterest.com)
I've always loved the feel that this kind of seating brings to a kitchen/dining room.  It's welcoming and comfortable.  I especially like the idea of storage underneath the banquette.  Especially if you have a small space and storage is a problem.

(Pinterest.com)

Bench seating is a great way to solve a problem with form and function if space of your dining or kitchen room is small. You can maximize your kitchen space by building your own kitchen banquette seating.

(Pinterest.com)

Definition of banquette seating, a French word for “bench”, is a long upholstered bench/seat placed against or attached into a wall of a space.

(Pinterest.com)

The curved banquette is also so attractive and works beautifully with a round or oval table.   The fabrics on a banquette can make the kitchen have such personality and class.
I discovered the below photo's from a project that I finished about 4 years ago and thought you might enjoy the before and after shots of the room.

Amazing what a change the banquette made to this space.  It use to be a "catch all" space and now it's a room that is used for gatherings.  The table opens up into an oval shape and they can pull in the additional chairs when they have more people they need to seat!  It's a great space now for better entertainment and the client was so happy to get a buffet for all her linens.
