A time to serve...in Malaga, Spain

You probably noticed my lack of posts over the past week. I just returned from a trip to Malaga, Spain.  My heart is full as I was privileged to be there for 10 days serving on an amazing hospitality team for  35 missionary woman at a "Woman of Influence Retreat."
There were woman from all over the world. Most of them work in pretty primitive areas and were in great need of an escape for solitude, encouragement and restoration after serving graciously overseas.
Some of them serve with the homeless, some dedicate their lives to inner city kids and others are counselors, teachers and leaders.   It was a joy to serve them and make them feel special all week long.
(The meeting place)
I thought I'd post some pictures of some of the fun things we cooked as well as some of the decor and atmosphere we got to create for these ladies.

Our rockin' hospitality team in our Flamenco aprons.
Yes, we were a fun group!

Our job was to do a bit of everything.  We cooked all the meals (the amazing head cook was the Blondie in the middle), we drove the woman back and forth to their villas and around town and created an inviting environment for them to enjoy.w  It was so much fun to see how God used our individual gifts.  The gifts of hospitality, organization, cooking, counseling, decorating, encouragement, etc.  When you put all these gifts together, exciting things happen.

Squishing in the car on the way to the villas!
I loved driving a stick shift again!

Many of these woman don't get the simple luxuries in the countries where they serve so we tried to pamper them as much as possible.  It was such an honor!

Cafe con leche and a "Spanish donut"

The first day, the serving team stopped for coffee, churros and chocolate before we headed out for all the shopping that had to be done for the week.  They dip these donut like pastries into this rich chocolate - yum!

Guzman's Nursery
Our next stop was the local nursery to purchase flowers for the meeting rooms and for the buffet tables.  Kind of tricky to purchase things for a place I'd never seen before but we did it.
It was a colorful shopping trip and our cart was filled with beautiful flowers and fresh herbs.

The statues were so stately and added so much character to the flowers.
Check out this massive wrought iron chandelier!  So great up against the thatch roof!
We had Tapas for lunch at a local restaurant downtown.
I had experienced Tapas on my last visit to Spain but it was a fun experience to try some different ones this time around.  I wasn't too crazy about the fried eggs with the fish but everything else was extremely tasty.
We then went to the Ranchero (I'll do a separate post about it - it was so beautiful) where the retreat took place and unloaded everything.
This was my first glimpse!  My heart skipped a beat!
I was immediately in heaven!  The property was so Spanish and the gardens were filled with fruit trees, flowers and incredible character.  The owners were absolutely delightful too!
The items we bought at the nursery incorporated with fresh fruit.
We immediately got to work on making the beautiful ranch setting welcoming, warm and a place the ladies could call home for 5 days.  Part of the team went into town and bought all the groceries.  Several of us stayed at the ranch to add all the personal touches before the Ranch was filled with the laughter of greeting one another.
I made floral arrangements using the flowers on their property and picked fruit from the trees!  The lemons looked so colorful in the water.
The bougainvillea were amazing and I picked them all week.
We also brought some in from a friends garden.
As I picked the flowers and walked around the property, I felt so blessed that I could use my gifts in this setting and for the purpose of making these woman enjoy the color and beauty that nature provides!
My girls and I stamped all the bags before I left home so they would be done when it came time to put them together.
We put them all together and placed them on their beds.
We hung name tags on their doors which I thought was a really nice personal touch.
Especially on these glorious old doors!
Always nice to know someone knew you were coming, especially when you have traveled for miles and miles and are tired and delirious.
I added flowers to the candelabra in the dining room.  This candelabra was so beautiful all lit up at night too.

I brought over loads of colorful tablecloths to add to the outdoor tables in the courtyard.

Of course we had to have matching napkins.  Believe me, my suitcase over to Spain was FULL!
BEFORE
This planter looked like it needed some TLC so I shopped around the garden and enhanced it a little.
AFTER
Much more interesting with more elements, textures and a candelabra for us to enjoy at night for evening ambiance.
I added some Moroccan lanterns to the mix too.
We filled these clear cups with a cupcake liner and added Reeses and Candy Corn that we brought from the states.  Thanks to my friends here in Dallas, they sent these treats over for the woman.  It was a huge hit as they don't get Reeses and Candy corn in Europe!  You should have heard the ooooohhhhssss and aaaaaahhhhssssss!
Burlap wrapped around the pots, tied with some raffia added a warm touch.
Once we got the special touches done, all the ladies started arriving.
I put this arrangement together using fruit from the gardens and a Russian dish towel that one of the ladies brought from Russia.  The color combinations with the fruit were so inviting.
As you can see, I had fun with all the fruit that was available to me!  Isn't the Russian bowl and the Spanish pottery combination so beautiful?  This eclectic mix made me smile.
The Pomegranates were from the trees too.
We made sure we had plenty of candles and oil for the tiki torches because we planned on eating all the meals outdoors in the courtyard.  We had NO RAIN so that was absolutely fabulous!
So cozy for chatting.  Lots of gathering took place in this room!
It was a glorious adventure searching through all the cabinets to find cool baskets, wooden bowls, etc. to serve the prepared dishes in.
The candy corn even made it to the appetizer table, ha!
Creating the backdrop for the Flamenco dancers involved a lot of digging around in closets for treasures!  Lori and I enjoyed finding a huge old frame and paired it with some rustic old shutters.  It created a wonderful atmosphere for these incredibly talented artists.
Check out all of these colorful meals that Traci headed up!
I brought home some fantastic recipes to try for my family.
Tomato, Feta and Cucumber Salad
Typical Spanish Salad
Tapas
Chicken Tiki Marsala
Tawny's homemade croutons from the leftover baguettes
Sims Chicken
Serving others is a fantastic journey.  The conversation we girls had while cutting up onions, chopping carrots and stirring the hot curry on the stove was priceless.   Driving the woman back and forth in the car was a chance for me to hear what they do and listen to their struggles.  Picking flowers with a friend and laughing our heads off as we balanced on a wobbly chair was food for our souls.
We ladies all have the same hurts, the same worries and all need to be appreciated and encouraged. The sense of community and acceptance is a gift we get when we are with other woman.
View from window as I landed in Spain.
They said that I encouraged them with the beauty I created but I say they encouraged me by the beauty these woman poured into my life.  Sometimes we all need to step out of our every day and into someone else's everyday to help us take the next step forward in trusting God.   It gave me a new and fresh perspective for what He has planned for me.
Don't be afraid to serve, it will be a gift you give others and yourself!

African Safari Style

Londolozi Lodge
South Africa
Being that I grew up in South Africa, I'm always drawn to resorts like the ones below because of what I call a unique style of decorating, "African Safari."  I wouldn't want this style in my entire home but I do love touches of my history incorporated here and there.  The items I have tell a story about my life and make my home personal.

Just like a great "Safari" outfit, I love a home that has this classic look too.  Monochromatic with a punch of color and texture.

I thought I'd show you a few of my favorite "African Safari" spaces and explain what makes this style so appealing.
The resort below is an incredible 5 star Lodge situated in the North West Province in the scenic Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa.

What a gorgeous setting!

If you are looking to add some excitement to your home, the beautiful kaleidoscope of colors, organic rich textures and primal patterns of African motif can get the job done with stunning elegance.
Nothing like the colors of an African sunset.
Mosquito netting is something I remember having as a kid.  I didn't think it was romantic then!  Now, I guess it's more of a trend to have this romantic look!

African safari decorating offers an appealing approach to any home design with its blend of African influence and European Old World style. This lifestyle is total relaxed living, offering a natural and comforting environment.

Authentic Safari inspired theme usually has down-filled quilts and mosquito netting atop a four-poster bed. There are usually bed linens and cushion covers made of cotton lace, painted fabrics from adorning cushions and upholstery.

Earthy tones such as browns, rusts, golds and burnt oranges are predominant throughout African safari decorating, with fabrics and pottery offered in a wide range of patterns and colors to complement any decorating style. Fabric embroidered threads are often colored with plum, yellow, red, brown and black, and are made from local plant dyes, creating the beautiful color palette so popular in the African motif.

Safari-oriented furniture can come in a variety of different flavors, and is often adorned with various different animal hides, including leather, leopard spots, zebra stripes or tiger skin. Traditional hand-painted fabrics, woven wools and cotton textiles serve to complete an impressive look.

Love that this decor isn't intimidating.  It's comfortable with a rustic elegance.  African wall hangings, such as masks, animal skins, or hand-forged copper works add a definite touch of African culture.

This plum color is a fun addition to the space and is often used in African decor.
Just look at this beautiful thatch roof!
Draperies add such a Safari tent feel to this room.
Great way to display these horns.
Safari style done so well.  A little touch of a tribal print on the pillows and a few other wooden wall hangings here and there.  Not over the top, just enough to make it feel like you are in Africa.
Safari elegance.

Lots of open air spaces in Africa.

I can just imagine the views of the game reserve from this spot!
African beads adorn this tufted ottoman.  Notice the little wooden bowls too.  The stack of vintage suitcases on the top shelf adds incredible texture and interest.  The above picture is a great example of how you can incorporate a touch of African Safari style to your home without going overboard.

Layered wooden trays made by the local Africans.
Adore this!!  I want this for my home!  This is gorgeous vignette.
I can feel a nap coming on under this thatch!  This is where you can have breakfast and watch for the local animals.
What a beautiful animal!
African fabrics come in an array of weaves and textures, and offer the opportunity to bring creativity to any room in your home with vibrant geometric design.
Dinner or breakfast surrounded by African jungle sounds appealing as long as they keep the lions away!
African pottery adds a beautiful touch to any bookshelf.  These colors look like an African sunset!
I can see this on top of some decorating books on a bookshelf or layered with other pots like it on a lovely hand carved tray.
A modern design with a touch of Africa at the foot of the bed.  Delightful.
A warm space with touches of African pottery and colors here and there.  These earth tones make for a relaxing space.
After looking at all these photos, my heart longs for Africa, my homeland.  I wouldn't even have to stay in one of these luxurious rooms, I would be happy in one of these Safari tents.

How amazing would this be? My sister graduated from Rift Valley Academy in Kenya.  For her Senior trip they went on a Safari and stayed in tents similar to this.
At night they had guards that sat by the flaming fire to keep the lions away.  Yikes!
This setting is amazing!
Hope you enjoyed this quick visual trip to Africa.
I'd love to take my family on a Safari, it's one of my dreams!

The colors of Colorado

Great reading and fishing spot at Castle Lakes Lodge.
We just returned from a 10 day family trip to Colorado.   We visited Lake City and Creed with lots of stops here and there and in between.

Castle Lakes
I often get asked what inspires me.  Being out in nature is at the top of my list.  There is something about "cool" air and mountains that clears your mind and makes you evaluate the simple things in life.
We loaded our families and our RV's and  took a break from cell phones, Internet, Facebook, TV, chores, and all the other distractions that life brings.  We just enjoyed being together and took in all our beautiful surroundings.
Our first stop was The Sand Dunes - Photo taken from our campsite.
Your eyes can't take in the immense beauty!
Those dots you see are our crew climbing to the top!
It goes on and on for miles and miles!
The kids of all ages had a blast running and rolling down the sand.

We rented jeeps one day and the three families climbed up Cinnamon Pass.
Crazy fun!
The kids LOVED it.
The views were breathtaking.
Just look at those colors!
Almost at the top!
The colors changed around every corner!  Drastic differences in landscape everywhere we looked.
The last of the snow!  We carved our names in the snow.
Kids can't resist snow on a mountain top.
The wildflowers were my favorite and we got out and explored.
Such vibrant colors.
The love of my life!

Perfectly imperfect.

Colorado State Flower - Rocky Mountain Columbine
The sound of this river I'll never forget!
It was pretty intense!
We finally got to the top and I almost lost my stomach a few times!
We enjoyed a picnic lunch once we arrived!  Elevation 12,640 ft.
Totally worth the 5 hour trip!
My family
We were surrounded by beautiful colors and fresh cool air!  So refreshing after being in 105 degree weather in Texas.
Animals were grazing in the fields.
Even saw the black sheep of the family!
Read about these Guard dogs that live with the livestock in the mountains and protect them from predators (including humans).  The kids didn't realize it was a guard dog until they came up to it and tried to hug it, like all kids do!  The dog was very protective and growled at them.  Someone informed us that these dogs live with the sheep and guard them night and day.
Loved this house tucked away in the woods.
Look at this one with it's own bridge over the river.
More to come on this house on next blog post.
Beautiful but I'd feel awfully lonely way up there.
My youngest daughter had fun with my camera on these next few photos.

Lots of Aspen trees.

Fresh raindrops.
Our last stop on our vacation was Creed.  We stayed at 30 mile Campground in the National Forest and it was the most relaxing place ever!  We will definitely be going back there!
You can see our RV in the distance.
This river ran along all the campsites and we loved sitting by it at night while making smores by the campfire.
We cooked huge breakfasts in the morning.
Nothing better than bacon and pancakes cooking out in the wilderness.
We also enjoyed our wine and cheese at night.  Tablecloth and real glasses included.
We decorator's camp with style!
The men kicked their boots off and sat with the ladies! We had amazing conversations, solved the worlds problems, laughed with the kids.....
and even fed a few chipmunks!
In the end, I've once again been reminded why we love to camp.  It makes you get away from the buziness of life and STOPS everything that makes you crazy busy and rushed every single day. Sometimes we get so caught up in what has to be done or what needs to be done that we forget about the best gems in life and that is the people and relationships that we have in our lives.  Taking time away from it all is what I call a vacation.
It was good to get away and come back refreshed and feeling blessed.
Remember.......LOVE ONE ANOTHER

Homes on the rocks, Canary Islands

Dwell Magazine
(Photographer, Gunnar Knechtel)
I was struck by the absolute beauty of the above home while reading "Dwell Magazine" today.
This home is built into volcanic rock in the Canary Islands.
Here are a few more similar homes that have literally been built into the coastal rock or are volcanic caves made into humble cottages.

This home is near a town of Las Caletillas and built painstakingly by hand by its owners.  Imagine sitting on these rocks to relax and read.  Perfect for a couple but scary for little kids, don't you think?

How about waking up to this view!

Surfboards become benches on this cute little cottage patio.

The natural shelter afforded by the volcanic cave not only keeps the homeowners cool during the summer, but makes for a striking whitewashed ceiling.
Tiny cottage near El Chorrillo.  Definitely cave like.  As long as their were no bats I would be okay living here, especially with such beautiful views of the ocean.

No frills kitchen but a view is what they are in this home for!
Hope you enjoyed a quick tour of unique homes on a Sunday afternoon!

The Colors of Panama

I just returned home from vacation today.  We spent a week in Panama visiting some friends and spent some great time on the beach!
Here are a some of the memories I captured through my camera lens.
The entryway to the house we stayed in Punta Barco.  I can't wait to share the inside of this home with you!
My favorite spot in the house.  Absolutely breathtaking!
The view I had each morning as I drank my coffee and ate my fresh papaya and pineapple.
My friend and I literally had tears in our eyes when we saw this view for the first time.
Shells the kids collected during the week.
The walk down to the sea.
Tropical flowers EVERYWHERE!
The place to "be still"
The sound of the crashing waves is like no other sound! I can still hear them in my mind.

We had 8 kids that enjoyed this refreshing oasis.  I love the sound of kids having fun!  We adults sat underneath the thatch umbrella and caught up with friends.
The market shopping in Panama City.  All my favorite colors.
Molas handmade by the Kuna Indians.  Such incredible embroidery work made into throw pillows.
Hand carved wooden bowls, flat enough to fit into a suitcase!
The view of downtown Panama City.
Old city Panama.  Architectural buildings that tell such a story.
Amazing textures!
The Zoo in El Valle.  Gorgeous animal.
The sound the Toucan makes is so cool!  Such a jungle sound.
Nothing like a vacation and nothing like coming home renewed!  A vacation blessing I'll never forget.  The rich time spent with family and friends will always be etched in my mind!
